Dating Organic and Inorganic Art Materials

Organic and inorganic art materials dating
  • Wood: Because wood is organic, we can carbon date wood samples from your artwork. We can also date wood used in panel paintings using dendrochronology.
  • Paper: Paper can be dated through AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) carbon dating, which requires very a small sample (1 mg). We can determine likely age-ranges for paper products by using wood fibers, pulping chemistry, paper additives, and surface treatments to serve as dating markers. Dating paper to an exact time period is not possible. However, AMS carbon dating is often able to exclude a sample from a given period.
  • Ceramics: We use a process called Thermoluminescence (TL) dating, which measures the radiation accumulated in ceramic objects since they were originally heated.

Our sampling techniques are as non-destructive as possible.

Results of our anlayis are documented in a report.
