A lost painting by the French Master Paul Delaroche was discovered in 2016 after appearing on a BBC program. The painting was previously purchased in 1989 by Neil Wilson. Wilson was an art collector who saw the painting listed at Christie’s as unattributed. For years Wilson attempted, without luck, to have the painting authenticated as a Delaroche. Finally, his widow continued the work of her late husband and brought the painting to Old Master expert, Philip Mould, who confirmed Wilson’s speculation. After additional research helped to back up the claims, the painting was taken to the Courtauld Institute in London for scientific testing. Through pigment testing and other forensic analysis, conservators validated claims that the painting was by Delaroche.
