FA painting, previously thought to be by one of Rembrandt’s students, was recently identified as an authentic Rembrandt self-portrait. Scientists at Cambridge University studied the structure of the wooden panel and the pigments used to come to their conclusion. A thick coat of yellowed varnish was previously masking the true colors. Pigment testing revealed that the composition was painted with blue cobalt and blue mineral azurite, two pigments that were used by Rembrandt.
