The Rubens House, located in Antwerp made a number of interesting discoveries over the years. A recent discovery involved the attribution of a Van Dyck painting. The painting was previously believed to be a portrait of Van Dyck by Rubens. Conservators at the Rubens House took a number of images of the painting using MA-XRF scanning. The scans revealed that the portrait was in fact a self-portrait by Van Dyck. While the painting was initially sent to the Frick for an extensive Van Dyck exhibition, it will remain in the permanent collection of the Rubens House. The discovery is an indication that scientific tests such as MA-XRF scanning are playing an increasingly large role in art authentication and attribution.
