X-ray fluorescence scans have revealed the true colors used in the Ghent Altarpiece. Scientists at the University of Antwerp are now able to use the technology to scan an entire artwork. It was revealed that an entire layer of paint was added after the medieval period. Historians were surprised how much of the surface had over painting. Ultimately the original brushwork was preserved in bottom layers.
