Signature analysis is often an important factor in art authentication. The signature trends of Johannes Vermeer have been studied extensively. Of 35 Vermeer paintings, known to be authentic, only 25 are signed. In each painting the signature slightly varies, at times appearing as a monogram and other times longer form signatures. In many cases the signatures have partially deteriorated and are hard to decipher without microscopic analysis.
In one painting, “The Geographer”, Vermeer applied two signatures. While it seemed unusual to conservators, microscopic analysis was used to show that both were authentic and applied in the same paint layer.
